Mark’s EU Week for Transport

As the EU resumes work following the summer recess, there is much work going on to allocate the many files from the Fit for 55 package published on July 14th, this means that we will soon know which political group and which MEP will be responsible for which file (more on that below).
The next big milestone for climate and transport policy, however, will be COP26 in early November in Glasgow. UKTiE has been engaging constructively with the UK Government and the EU in the build up to COP26 and we are pleased to invite you to an exclusive briefing we are co-hosting, along with the UK Mission to the EU.
It will be held on Friday 24 September 09:30 BST to 11:30 BST (10:30 CEST to 12:30 CEST) in person at the headquarters of the Railway Industry Association, Kings Building, 16 Smith Square, London SW1P 3HQS, or you can join virtually via Teams. The event aims to build on the G7 transport commitments in the Leaders’ Communiqué Our Shared Agenda for Global Action to Build Back Better and to promote the delivery of a bold, ambitious and holistic zero carbon transport agenda through swift and coordinated global action. Jennifer Raynor, Head of Transport at COP26, from the UK Government, together with Ms Ana Maria Danil, from the European Commission will be the keynote speakers, and there will be case studies from leading figures from across Europe and across industry.

1. Transport and the Route to COP26 – UKTiE event
Expert speakers include:

- Breakout sessions to discuss next steps and beyond COP26. In particular, we want to ensure COP26 takes a holistic view of transport decarbonisation.
2. Fit for 55 package allocation
As the European Parliament gets to work on the Fit for 55 package, the following transport relevant files have been allocated to Committees!
- RefuelEU Aviation: TRAN to lead, ITRE and ENVI to provide opinion
- FuelEU Maritime: TRAN to lead, ITRE and ENVI to provide opinion
- Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Directive: TRAN to lead, ITRE and ENVI to provide opinion
- Revision of Emissions Trading Scheme (aviation): ENVI to lead, TRAN to provide opinion
- Revision of Emissions Trading Scheme (maritime, transport and buildings): ENVI to lead, TRAN and ITRE to provide opinion
- Revision of the Renewable Energy Directive: ITRE to lead, ENVI, IMCO and TRAN to provide opinion
3. UKTiE has also put together the latest timetable of key transport and supply chain developments in Europe. We will keep this up to date as the process develops:
- 24 September 2021: UKTiE pre-COP26 event.
- 27 September 2021: Next TRAN Committee.
- 27 September 2021: Next ENVI Committee.
- 1-12 November 2021: COP 26.
