A Defining Moment in UK-EU Relations

📅 Date: 19 May

On 19 May, the UK-EU Reset Summit will provide a rare opportunity to redefine post-Brexit cooperation. This is not about rewriting history but forging a new way forward—one that acknowledges political realities while unlocking mutual economic benefits. If both sides are serious about reducing trade friction and increasing cooperation, there is a path to progress.

For UKTiE, the priority is clear: transport, trade, and technology must be at the heart of this new agenda. However complex UK-EU relations may be, we must ensure that goods and services move more freely, and both sides rise to the technological challenges of the future.

The case for greater UK-EU cooperation has never been stronger. With geopolitical uncertainty mounting, potential tariffs on the horizon, NATO undergoing a strategic reset, and diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine intensifying, this is arguably the most significant realignment since 1945.

The UK-EU Reset Summit is an opportunity to ensure that transport and trade are at the forefront of this new era of strategic cooperation. Join us on 3 April and help shape the conversation ahead of this crucial moment for UK-EU relations.

Europe’s Bold Moves: The Clean Industrial Deal, Omnibus Simplification Package & Industrial Action Plan for the European Automotive Sector

Brussels has unveiled three major initiatives set to shape the future of European industry and business, including transport: The Clean Industrial Deal, the Omnibus Simplification Package and the Industrial Action Plan for the European Automotive Sector. These ambitious plans will not only seek to drive European decarbonisation and reindustrialisation, but also set the stage for significant transformations in transport, trade, and investment—developments that the UK cannot afford to ignore.

The Clean Industrial Deal: Powering Europe’s Future

The Clean Industrial Deal is Europe’s boldest step yet towards innovation, decarbonisation, and industrial competitiveness. Designed to accelerate the green transition, the plan aims to secure resources, boost sustainable industries, and reinforce Europe’s leadership in clean technology.

Crucially, this initiative will be followed later this year by a Sustainable Transport Investment Plan, which will be accompanied by a series of measures to enhance European transport competitiveness, strengthen connectivity, and drive decarbonisation. The direction set by the EU will have profound implications for global markets, including the UK.

Industrial Action Plan for the European automotive sector

The European Commission has unveiled a bold Action Plan for the Future of the Automotive Industry, designed to drive innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness. Building on the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the European Automotive Industry, the plan includes €1.8 billion to secure battery raw materials, a new European Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Alliance, and a regulatory framework for AI-powered, automated vehicles. To support the green transition, the Commission will introduce flexibility in CO2 standards compliance, boost demand for zero-emission vehicles, and enhance worker reskilling initiatives. With global competition intensifying, the EU is also strengthening supply chains, tackling unfair trade practices, and simplifying regulations to ensure the sector remains a global leader.

Omnibus Simplification Package: Cutting Red Tape for Business

In a significant step towards a more efficient and business-friendly Europe, the European Commission has introduced the first two Omnibus packages of simplification measures. These aim to reduce bureaucracy, streamline regulations, and enhance the ease of doing business across the EU. By tackling unnecessary administrative burdens, these measures aim to create a more dynamic business environment, fostering innovation and growth.

What This Means for the UK

These initiatives highlight the EU’s commitment to strengthening its industrial and economic resilience. The Clean Industrial Deal will strengthen the ability of European businesses to deliver the global green transition. The Auto Action Plan will seek to boost EU car manufacturing, and the Omnibus Simplification Package signals a more agile European business landscape. For the UK, these shifts present both challenges and opportunities.

As Europe moves forward with its ambitious plans, how Britain responds will define its own industrial and economic trajectory. Engaging with these developments is essential for ensuring that UK businesses remain competitive, and that Britain continues to play a leading role in shaping the future of transport, trade, and sustainable industry.
