It’s an exciting and pivotal time for European transport policy! The European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass due out today and Clean Industrial Deal, due out very soon, could be game-changers, especially with their fresh approach to transport, decarbonization, and reindustrialization. If the details revealed by President von der Leyen at Davos are anything to go by, this might truly shake things up.

Based on the latest developments from the European Commission here are the top three key points:

  1. Focus on Emerging Technologies: The European Union is prioritizing advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and affordable clean energy to enhance its global competitiveness. This initiative includes measures to simplify business regulations and boost productivity, aiming to decarbonize manufacturing sectors.
  2. Subsidies for Electric Vehicles (EVs): To strengthen Europe’s automotive industry and counter competition from Chinese EV manufacturers, the European Commission is designing a subsidy program to boost the electric vehicle market across Europe. This initiative aims to replace inconsistent national subsidies and adhere to World Trade Organization regulations.
  3. ‘Buy European’ Procurement Strategy: The Commission is considering a proposal that would allow governments to favor European bidders in public procurement processes. This strategy aims to protect critical EU sectors from cheaper foreign competitors, particularly from China, and is part of the broader “Competitiveness Compass” document.

Now, more than ever, it’s essential that the UK works hand-in-hand with our European friends to drive forward transformative policies for transport and trade. The stakes are high, but so are the opportunities. The European Commission’s bold initiatives, like the Competitiveness Compass and Clean Industrial Deal, highlight the urgency of collaboration as we tackle decarbonization, innovation, and reindustrialization. Meanwhile, there are growing signs that a major spring summit between the two will see the agreement of a substantive agenda for deepening the post-Brexit relationship.

As UKTiE, we’re already stepping up to meet this moment. Building on the game-changing UK-EU Transport ‘Reset’ event held in Westminster on 11 November -organised in partnership with the UK’s Department for Transport—we’re developing an ambitious action plan alongside the DfT and UKMis. This plan will shape bold and visionary priorities to forge a stronger, future-focused UK-EU partnership in transport and trade.

The new year has already begun with tremendous momentum: a high-level meeting with Mona Björklund, Director, and her team in the European Commission’s DG MOVE. The exchange of ideas was nothing short of inspiring, setting the tone for a year of impactful collaboration.

And we’re just getting started. This spring, we’ll be back in London for another round of strategic meetings in Westminster and Whitehall, uniting industry leaders and policymakers to build alignment. Then, on 14 May, we return to Brussels for an unmissable showcase event at the UK Ambassador’s Residence—celebrating the very best of UK and European transport, tech & trade collaboration.
