On 1 December, the von der Leyen Commission II took office. This followed the European Parliament’s earlier endorsement of the new College of Commissioners and its new mandate, which the President had proposed in September 2024. In her speech before the plenary last week, she presented the priorities and ambitions of the European Commission for 2024-2029, based on her Political Guidelines of July, and taking into account the European Parliament’s November hearings with the Commissioners-designate. The new College will have five Executive Vice-Presidents and 20 Commissioners, divided per portfolio, Member State, and political priority, together with the Vice-President/High-Representative for Foreign Affairs of the European Union. “Now I will gather my team as of Monday. And we will get to work,” said the President in the press conference following the vote.
Now the European Commission is in place, and getting to work, we can step up our work as UKTiE, following up the transformative UK-EU Transport ‘Reset’ event held in Westminster on November 11th, in partnership with Dft. Our action plan is being developed with DfT & UKMiS, will help us shape bold priorities for a stronger UK-EU partnership for transport & trade. It will kick off with a meeting with the European Commission in Brussels in January 2025. Join us! The future is ours to build—together!
The new European Commission, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
